This Saturday after sundown, Jews across Canada and around the world will be gathering with friends and family to celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.

Hanukkah gives all Canadians an opportunity to remember the story of Judah Maccabee, a story of hope triumphing over despair, of perseverance triumphing over oppression, and most importantly, a story of great faith. For people of the Jewish faith, I hope that this eight-day celebration is a time of great hope, when you are reminded that even the smallest can shine brightly.
