The courage of the Rohingya people in the face of tremendous persecution is almost overwhelming.
I was very pleased to meet with two advocates in Washington DC in July, Mohammed and Mohib, as they thank Canada for our support and ask that we remind the world of their ongoing hardship.
I am also thankful to have met with Canadian Rohingya leaders and Kamal Kherav in July as we shared our experiences visiting the refugee camps and Canada’s strategy towards a just solution.
After my town hall with constituents about the current situation of Rohingyan refugees in Bangladesh, I have continued to discuss what I learned during my visit to Cox’s Bazar. Colleagues and friends showed genuine interest in my recent visit to Bangladesh to witness the Rohinhya crisis and Canada’s response to the genocide and our ongoing support for over one million Rohingya refugees.
Bangladesh has played a critical role hosting Rohingya refugees. Kamal Khera, Minister Bill Blair and I met with the Bangladeshi community in July to discuss Canada’s role supporting host countries, ensuring they have the infrastructure and ability to host refugees and care for the local population.
Canada’s tremendous contribution to the Rohingyan refugees made me so proud during my visit to Bangladesh. But, we can’t stop now. Our support for over one million Rohingya refugees must continue until the permanent solution we are working towards is in place.
